Purpose of Suffering

This information is offered with the hope that YOU can come to KNOW the Lord personally.

A TRUE STORY OF A SUFFERING WOMAN

A dear woman that I know whose son died recently had lived a life FULL of heartache and despair.   She took care of her invalid mother for years ALONE.  (While her family stole from her.   They sold her mother's property and kept the money.)  Her former husband treated her miserably (even having her take care of his lover's dog.)  She was left with no electricity, no hot water, etc.  Her children stole from her and treated her with contempt.  Even a trip to the drive through window (after shopping with a son) resulted in her NOT EVEN BEING ASKED if she wanted anything.  Her money was spent.  She slept in the floor with her dog.  She would hide under the covers ashamed of who she was.  Even if she managed to get an outfit, she would not wear it because she was not worthy.

Seeing her misery, I had tried several times to give her something, but I was BLOCKED each time.  Three weeks before her son died apparently was the time the Lord had set aside for her pain to bear fruit.  She prayed to the Lord, "Even if it means me losing my little flower pot (what she called a son), Lord, I am giving him to you."  SHE HAD GIVEN UP to the LORD.  In spite of the fact that she had SPENT HER WHOLE LIFE TRYING TO GET   S O M E O N E  TO LOVE HER, she was willing to GIVE UP her son to the LORD.  She had gotten to the point where she could not even write anything on paper, but, she said that "coming to the cross was such sweet solace."  "JESUS LIFTED ME UP," she said.  An acquaintance said, "that soap you are using is making you CRAZY."

When you come face to face with Jesus, you become "CRAZY."  This is because nothing else in the world matters but Jesus and him crucified.  She said, "we are not worthy to kiss His feet, but He loves us anyway."   We both laughed and cried at these words.

The noise of the "weeping" and the noise of the "shout of joy" can not be distinguished (see Ezra 3:12-13) when we realize that the LORD has taken up residence in his temple (our own miserable body), the "fleshly tablets of the heart."    Jesus, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD, is in me and "I know him and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of HIS SUFFERINGS, BEING MADE CONFORMABLE unto HIS death." (Phil 3:10)

Many read His Word, few receive his revelation, because they are proud and wrestle with his chastening.  "He showeth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments UNTO ISRAEL." (PSALMS 147:19)
Jacob was broken by the Lord and then became Israel.  The Lord reveals his "statutes" and "judgments" only to BROKEN men.

LORD GOD, make us to know "how frail [we are]" (Psa 39:4).  LORD GOD, we thank you even if "My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore, and my kinsmen stand afar off." (Psa 38:11)  This is the " solitary way" (Psa 107:4).  We must "sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being BOUND IN AFFLICTION and IRON." (Psa 107:10)

Yes, this woman "cried unto the Lord in [her] trouble" because HE had "brought down [her] heart with labour" and she "fell down, and there was none to help" and the LORD "saved [her] out of [her] distresses ." (Psa 107:10-13)  Praise the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father.

"For HE maketh sore, and bindeth up: HE woundeth, and his hands make whole " (Job 5:8).  Friend, do you not see that it is God Himself who is causing the "wounds" and "sores" of this dear woman (just as He had done to Job)?  "For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore " (Psa 38:2) are the words of David.

"For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.  My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.  I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.  For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh."  These are the words of David (Psa 38:4-7).  Observe that David is UNDER CONVICTION for his sins.  He is not blaming someone else.  He says, "For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin" (Psa 38:18).

WHO "Broke" David and Who "Broke" the Dear Woman?

"Thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death (Psa 44:19).  It is "THOU", the Lord, who has done this.  Furthermore, David says "Thou, which hast showed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth" (Psa 71:20) and "the LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death" (Psa 118:18).  The Lord's chastening of us is not the end.  He brings us up in the end; but, He must bring us down first.

You may say that it was others who had done wickedly to this woman and to David.  You would be correct, but only partially.  David prayed "arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: (Psa 17:13)."  The wicked themselves are declared to be the Lord's sword.  Therefore, ALL THINGS can be received as from God, even persecution by the wicked.

Now we know that the wicked "plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth" (Psa 37:12).  "The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation" (Psa 37:14).  The end of the wicked is in sight, however.  "For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be"  (Psa 37:10).

What do God's people do that the wicked do not?  That is, how do you recognize the wicked and the believer in Jesus?   We know that " by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast."

Yes, salvation is totally by the Lord - no boasting is allowed.

"Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes " (Psa 119:155).   "Seek" means to pursue diligently, to search out and discover, to embrace, to hold on to, to rely on, etc.  "Salvation" includes deliverance from the effects of sin.  "Salvation" includes the END results of the work of Jesus in our lives.

How Does One Learn His Statutes?

"It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes" (Psa 119:71).  His statutes are learned THROUGH AFFLICTION (which the LORD HIMSELF gives us).  This may be THROUGH His "sword " (a wicked man) or other circumstances (his "arrows " or his " hands ").  It is FROM the LORD and is NECESSARY for us to understand "How frail [we] are" and how awesome HE is.   It is only after we have been humbled by the Lord that we can be usable by Him for His purposes.  Prior to this "breaking", we are working only in the flesh and not in the spirit.

What is the Objective of God's Afflicting Us?

"That may I know him and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of HIS SUFFERINGS, BEING MADE CONFORMABLE unto HIS death ." (Phil 3:10)

Psalms 119:171   My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.

Romans 8:29   For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to BE CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

How is a Man Saved?

Jesus died for your sins.  He IS GOD (John chapter 1).
He suffered willingly, having done no wrong.  He is worthy.
Believe in Jesus.  He is the way to God.  There is no other way.
You are a sinner and NOTHING you do will EARN salvation.
"There is none good, no not one." [John 14;6, Acts 16;31, Romans 5:12, Rom 5:19]

Are you alone?  In trouble?  Afflicted?  Not loved?  Misunderstood?
Sad?  Depressed?  Romans 10:13 says "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be saved."   (Whosoever includes you.)   Call upon him today.  It is ok to CRY to HIM.  POUR it out.

SURRENDER and say to God, "I give up, I give up, I receive you as my only hope.  Your blood was shed for me and I am not worthy.  My sins are many.  My life is too hard, save me.  Thank you for showing me I am a sinner."
