Pride - the Obstacle to Knowing God

This information is offered with the hope that YOU can come to KNOW the Lord personally.

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

It is certainly true that Jesus must increase and I must decrease.  There is no other way.  This will not happen in any "voluntary humility" either.  A "voluntary humility" is no humility at all, just the product of "religiosity."  "Religiosity" will not bring us closer to the Lord.

We SECRETLY can  not tolerate the notion that all good is the Lord's doing.  We MUST be on the throne.  We MUST give credit to OURSELVES.  We want to RULE and we will not give up our reign.  Our "religiosity" is even a way for us to stay seated on the throne.  If you can not admit this is true, then, you are lying to yourself [and calling God a liar ] and you have not come anywhere near to the Almighty in your daily life.  I know this to be true because I have to fight this struggle myself.  .  He has made me "to drink the wine of astonishment."  Praise the name of the LIVING GOD because " it IS a FEARFUL thing to FALL into the HANDs of the LIVING GOD ."  (Heb 10:31)   Do not say that YOUR defeats are NOT HE (Jer 5:12).

Why is this necessarily so?

1 Corinthians 2:14   But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The natural man can NOT know the things of God.  The natural man is still natural after he is saved.  He still has the old rebellious nature in him.  His heart is still corrupted.  To keep the natural man on the throne, the heart is in the habit of leading me astray because it is full of false and misleading notions.  These false notions are those that promote myself and the ideas that resist God's exaltation.

Jeremiah 17:9   The heart is deceitful above all things , and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Proverbs 16:5   Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

Psalms 39:5   Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

The BEST state of a man is total vanity.

Isaiah 64:6   But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

All our righteousnesses are filthy rags.  These "filthy rags" are the "coverings" and "clothes" we wear to come before the Lord.
The only way we can progress is for the Lord to root out these things in our heart.
What does the Lord think about our "religion?"

Isaiah 1:14   Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me ; I am weary to bear them.

(I have found that the Israelites show us exactly where we stand with the Lord.)

Psalms 139:23   Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

If there is anything in us, it must be taken out and we must be lead IN THE WAY.

Psalms 139:24   And see if there be any wicked way in me , and lead me in the way everlasting.

How is this accomplished?

Proverbs 1:23   Turn you at my reproof : behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

The Lord sends us "reproof" to cause us to "turn" and change our minds.  Do not be like most who DENY that He is at work, who DENY that any trouble could be from the Lord Himself.

Jeremiah 5:12   They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

But, it is the Lord:

Psalms 38:2   For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

It is only after you recognize His work ("reproof") that you will "turn" (change your mind).   Then, Jesus reveals Himself to you - the only way you are going to know Him.  Those who consider themselves wise are not.

Matthew 11:27   All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him .

Mathew 11:25 Thou hast hid these things from the wise and the prudent and hast revealed them unto babes.   "Babes" are dependent and helpless.  They are not lifted up in pride.

Once the Lord has dealt with you-

Psalms 17:3  Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing ; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

the Lord finds NOTHING (because you have been EMPTIED of self).

That is why coming to the Lord is not something we accomplish, it is something HE accomplishes.  It is not accomplished by any talent we have, any inclination we have, any strength we have, any merit we have.

Zechariah 4:6   Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

The power that we are given is this-

to be TOLD what our transgressions are (before we are turned [Jacob]) and the inherent rebellion of our nature, sin, (after we are turned [Israel]).

Micah 3:8   But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression , and to Israel his sin.

Do not be rebellious and cover yourself with religion which adds more sin to the sin that is already there.

Isaiah 30:1   Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering , but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:

Do not build yourself up with strength as the world would do to trust in the visible-

Isaiah 30:2   That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

If you go as the world goes, it will be a shame and a confusion-

Isaiah 30:3   Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion .

Worldy strength is for no purpose-

Isaiah 30:7   For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.

Be still and know that I AM GOD. - Psa 46:10

We refuse to be still and LISTEN-
Isaiah 30:8   Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
Isaiah 30:9   That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:

We do not want to hear the truth, we want to hear "SMOOTH things"-

Isaiah 30:10   Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

The LORD tells us to REST in Him, but, we refused-

Isaiah 30:15   For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not .

No matter how fast you go and how busy you become, you can not escape-

Isaiah 30:16   But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses ; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift ; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.

What will the LORD do while we busy ourselves?   He will WAIT until our devices FAIL.  Only then can He be exalted.
The Lord can not be gracious to a man lifted up in pride.  He can not be gracious to a proud man.  A proud man does not need grace. Until the LORD is exalted in our heart, how can He have mercy on us?  We do not need mercy when WE are lifted up.  He will not give mercy apart from our having judged ourselves under the "reproof" of the Almighty.

Isaiah 30:18   And therefore will the LORD wait , that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted , that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him .

Only when we recognize His reproof will we be TAUGHT of the LORD-

Isaiah 30:20   And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers :

Isaiah 30:21   And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.

Once we are taught of the LORD, we will throw away our "ornaments" and "coverings" as a menstrous cloth.  We will say to our works - "Get away from me, you are filthy."

Isaiah 30:22   Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.

The world teaches us to be strong, mighty, knowledgable, wise, but-

Isaiah 31:1   Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help ; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

The Lord resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
