To Get a True Understanding of Daniel 9:24-27, read Daniel's prayer at the bottom of this page.

This page could be Subtitled:

One of the MOST AWESOME Prayers Ever Prayed!!

If you really want to build a Biblical system describing the end-times and you fail to include Daniel 9:27, you will have no system at all.  It is the failure to understand and apply Daniel 9:27 that is the root cause for failure in other false end-times systems of thought.

A total of seventy (70) "WEEKS" are determined for "thy people", Daniel's people, the Jews.  Sixty nine (69) of these "WEEKS" have already happened.  Because these sixty nine (69) "WEEKS" that have ALREADY happened lasted a total of 483 years, we know how long the 70th "WEEK" will be.

The reason we know that the 70th "week" lasts 7 years is that the 7 "weeks" and 62 "weeks" (a total of 69 "weeks"), which have already happened, lasted exactly 483 years = 69 weeks  X  7 years/week.  The Messiah made His triumphant entry into the City of Jerusalem (Mathew 21:8) exactly 483 years after the commandment of Artaxerxes to rebuild the temple, March 14, 445 B.C. Subsequently He was "cutoff", crucified as recorded in Daniel 9:26.  Please note that He was crucified AFTER the 7 weeks and the 62 weeks.  That is, He was crucified AFTER the 69th week.

This whole prophecy (of Daniel) was made in 538 B.C. while the Jews were in Babylon at the end of their 70-year captivity.  The 1st 69 "weeks" were fulfilled exactly as predicted and the 70th "week" will also.

Here is the TOTAL SEVENTY "WEEKS"
Daniel 9:24   SEVENTY WEEKS are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Here are the Sixty nine (7 + 62) "WEEKS" that have already Happened
Daniel 9:25   Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be SEVEN WEEKS , and THREESCORE and TWO WEEKS: the street shall be built  again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

Daniel 9:26   And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Here is the ONE "WEEK" that Remains
Daniel 9:27   And he shall confirm the covenant with many for ONE WEEK : and in the MIDST of the WEEK he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Since God said he would deal with the Jews as a NATION for SEVENTY "WEEKS" and He promised to regather them nationally in the future in preparation for His Coming, then, God plans to deal with the NATION Israel in the future for ONE "WEEK" before He returns.  To say that ONE WEEK of Daniel 9:27 has already happened (since God says He will regather Israel as a NATION) is to say there will be 71 WEEKS.  To say that the week WILL NOT happen in the future is to say there are less than SEVENTY "WEEKS."

Since we already know (from the 69 weeks that HAVE happened) that a "WEEK" is SEVEN YEARS, then, God must have a future dealing with the NATION Israel for SEVEN years.

What did Jesus Christ Himself have to say about this?

In Mathew 24:3 Jesus was asked a question- " ...what shall be the sign of thy coming and of the end of the world?"
Jesus Answers the Question About TIMING of the End of the Age
Matthew 24:15   When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation , spoken of by Daniel the prophet , stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Matthew 24:16   Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Matthew 24:17   Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

Matthew 24:18   Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Matthew 24:19   And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Matthew 24:20   But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

Matthew 24:21   For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Here we have Jesus making a direct reference to Daniel 9:27

I had previously engaged in a debate in which my adversary said that Jesus words in Mathew 24 were NOT referring to Daniel 9:27.   My point here is to demonstrate that this is not only false but also to take this position is catastrophic to understanding prophecy.

So the question is -  Is there any other scripture in the Bible that describes the 70th WEEK of Daniel?  If the answer to this question is NO, then, Daniel 9:27 (and those that indirectly and eventually support it) are the definitive starting point to understand all of prophecy.

To arrive at an answer I posed TWO (2) questions in a discussion forum:
1) Could Jesus have been referring in Mathew 24 to an event that has now already happened?

Mathew 24:3 answers this as a definitive NO.  He was referring to the "end of the world (age)"

2) Is there any other scripture that describes the 70th WEEK of Daniel?
As you will see, I worded the question incorrectly, but, the one who answered the question ("Watcher") did an excellent job.

After I received "Watcher's" answers, I quoted his answers and said-
Watcher, thank you, we agree completely. There is one point though.

Watcher's quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And is there ANY other scriptural reference to Daniel's 70th week other than Dan 9? Yep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watcher's quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months.   Rev 11:2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watcher's quote continued:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I will give [power] unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days , clothed in sackcloth."  Rev 11:3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watcher's quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days. Rev 12:6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watcher's quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time , from the face of the serpent." Rev.12:14
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watcher's quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months." Rev 13:5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The beauty of Watcher's quotes is that they ALL show EXACTLY one HALF of the SEVEN year tribulation.  Remember, in the MIDST of the WEEK (Daniel 9:27) is when the abomination takes place.  That is, it occurs at EXACTLY the MIDDLE of the SEVEN year period.

Each Jewish month is 30 days, giving a 360-day year.  Three and one half years is FORTY and TWO (42) months . Forty two months is 30 x 42 = 1260 ( a thousand two hundred and threescore days.)  Three and one half years is further represented as times (2), time (1), and half a time.

I replied to Watcher-
Watcher, you summed this up extremely well. I, however, should have been more specific in my question. Had I done this, your answers would have completed the objective I had originally.

The objective - To show that without Daniel 9:27 referring to Daniel's 70th week we would have NO week and NO reconciliation with Revelation (the matches occur using HALF the tribulation ONLY making the MIDST and the TOTAL length absolutely essential).

What you said, in effect, is there is NO other verse in the Bible showing the FULL 70th week of 84 months. My question should have read "are there any verses describing the FULL 70th week?"

It is also true that NO other verse defines the MIDDLE of the WEEK directly . They only USE the information provided by Daniel 9:27 - there is a "week" and it has a midpoint.

Since this ONE VERSE DANIEL 9:27 also states that in the MIDST is when the abomination occurs and since All the references in Revelation are to ONE HALF the week, not the WHOLE week , Then, the following MUST be true:

1) We have already agreed that Daniel 12 and Daniel 9:27 refer to the same event. (Therefore Jesus' reference in Mathew 24 is to Daniel 9:27 and Daniel 12)

Concerning Daniel 12, I had said-
Since Dan 12:7 refers to times (2), time(1), and half(1/2), is this not 3 and one half years and is therefore not identical to the MIDST of the week of Dan 9:27?  Also, is not the 1290 and 1335 days of Dan 12 measured from the midst of the 70th week?
And is there ANY other scriptural reference to Daniel's 70th week other than Dan 9?  Therefore, are not Daniel 9 and 12 talking about the same thing?  It seems absolutely necessary to me.

2) The WEEK of Daniel 9:27 is the ONLY scripture that REVEALS the TOTAL length of the tribulation.
(we have already agreed that Christ's words MUST refer to the END).

3) Daniel 9:27, in conjunction with the verses you mentioned (quoted above from your post and Revelation), PROVE undoubtedly that Daniel 9:27's "WEEK" is described in the Book of Revelation

4)and lastly Since there is ONLY ONE "WEEK" mentioned in the ENTIRE Bible, it MUST match Revelation.

The ONLY way #4 can be false is if Daniel 9:27 took place in the past (which we have already shown is impossible based on the words of Jesus in Mathew 24:3)

AND

There are 71 WEEKS of Daniel (one "WEEK" in 66-73AD, the past, and one in Revelation , also impossible).

All this discussion may sound "nitpicking" to the extreme, but it renders Daniel 9:27 ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to END-times prophecy.

Given the truth of what we have said so far, the next conclusion that MUST be drawn is this-

The "Prince that shall come" is INDEED the antichrist and can be NO OTHER personage.

To wrap this up we see the "abomination" in the new testament-
2 Thessalonians 2:4   Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God , showing himself that he is God.

This is the antichrist in the temple.

One other point-
Daniel 9:24 says that the seventy weeks have an ending (a culmination).  What is it- " to bring in everlasting righteousness and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy."

This shows clearly that the end of the SEVENTY WEEKS results in the completion of the UNSEALED vision in Revelation chapter 6 when the seals are opened and ends in the bringing in of everlasting righteousness - the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.   Hence the 70th week of Daniel MUST be future.

One of the Most AWESOME Prayers Ever Prayed

Note- This prayer was actually interrupted in order to be answered.  See Daniel 9:21.  When was the last time your prayer was interrupted by the angel Gabriel so he could give you an answer?

Daniel's ATTITUDE is right-  To read about attitudes, read this and this .
Daniel is inquiring as to the restoration of the people (the Jews) and the city (Jerusalem) WHICH ARE CALLED by HIS (the Almighty's) NAME, an awesome perspective for sure.  Therefore, Daniel is talking about the ULTIMATE disposition of Jerusalem and he is asking the Almighty what is He going to do for His Own Name's sake.

Since God is going to deal in judgment with Jerusalem during the "time of Jacob's trouble", then, the ultimate answer to Daniel's prayer must come upon the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, the ANSWER (found in Daniel 9:24-27) MUST be for the endtimes.

Otherwise, the Almighty's answer to Daniel's prayer would leave Jerusalem desolate from the Roman invasion and destruction of 70 AD.  The Almighty will never answer such a prayer with desolation and desctruction .

Daniel 9:3   And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

Daniel 9:4   And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God , keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;

Daniel 9:5   We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

Daniel 9:8   O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

Daniel 9:9   To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;

Daniel 9:10   Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

Daniel 9:11   Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.

Daniel 9:12   And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us , by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem .

Daniel 9:14   Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us : for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.

Daniel 9:16   O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.

Daniel 9:17   Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.

Daniel 9:18   O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations , and the city which is called by thy name : for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies .

Daniel 9:19   O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

                                                                                  ----

Daniel's Prayer is Answered

Daniel 9:20   And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

Daniel 9:21   Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

Daniel 9:22   And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.

Daniel 9:23   At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.

How beautiful is this prayer and answer.   When Daniel BEGAN to speak, the commandment was given to GIVE DANIEL the ANSWER.   How wonderful and beautiful.

To say that the answer is for the 66-70 AD destruction of Jerusalem is an affront to the Almighty God, the CITY and THE PEOPLE that are CALLED by HIS NAME.

Hence, the answer-

Daniel 9:24   SEVENTY WEEKS are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city ,

(to do WHAT?)

(1) to finish the transgression ,   (all of it)
(2) and to make an end of sins ,
(3) and to make reconciliation for iniquity,
(4) and to bring in everlasting righteousness ,
(5) and to seal up the vision and prophecy ,
(6) and to anoint the most Holy .    This would be the holy of holies in the temple where Christ's throne will be.

To argue that this happened in 70AD is an insult to the Almighty and to His servant Daniel, the "greatly beloved."

End 06-08-2003

06-13-2003
There is other evidence in the Book of Revelation that demonstrates that Daniel's 70th week MUST occur in the future during the events of the Book of Revelation (not in some time in the past, such as, 66-73AD, for example).

1) Daniel 9:27 is the ONLY verse to explicitly refer to the 70th "WEEK" and also to the "MIDST of the WEEK."
2) We already know (from above) that the tribulation is 2520 days, 84 months, or 7 years.
3) We already know (from above) that half of each of these measures yields 1260 days, 42 months, or 3 and one half years.

4) The Book of Revelation shows us CLEARLY the FIRST HALFof the tribulation (Daniel's 70th "week") as follows:

Revelation 11:3   And I will give power unto my two witnesses , and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days (1260 days ), clothed in sackcloth.

Revelation 11:4-6   These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.   And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.   These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

Revelation 11:7-8   And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.  And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

Revelation 11:9-12   And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodiesthree days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them , and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.  And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

So, we see here that the 2 witnesses for God rise from the dead AFTER LYING DEAD in the streets for 3 and one half days.  They were killed by the beast who ascended from the bottomless pit.  We know that the beast (the antichrist) ascends from the bottomless pit and enters the temple in the "midst of the week".    Therefore the 2 witnesses are killed in the midst of the week after having preached for 1260 days during the first half of the week.  Their enemies (also the enemies of God) celebrate their death by giving gifts during the 3 and one half days that their bodies lie in the street.  If this happened during the second half of the week, the enemies of God would have already been destroyed at the second coming of Christ and they would not be around for the three and one half days their bodies lay in the street.  [There will be no celebrating by the enemies of Christ for three and one half days after Christ returns.] Furthermore, the witnesses could not preach for 1260 days (if they started in the middle of the week) because this would require the ascending of the antichrist out of the bottomless pit to happen at the end of the week, thus, giving the antichrist no time to accomplish anything before Christ returns.  Because of all these reasons - one is required to conclude that the two witnesses preach for the first half of the tribulation - 1260 days and that this first half of the tribulation is clearly dilineated in the Book of Revelation and is exactly equal to one half of Daniel's 70th "week."

5) The Book of Revelation also shows us CLEARLY the SECOND HALF of the tribulation (Daniel's 70th "week").

Revelation 11:1   And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God , and the altar, and them that worship therein.

Revelation 11:2   But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

We already know that the in the "midst of the week" he shall " cause the sacrifice [of the temple] and the oblation [of the Jews in the temple] to cease."  If the Gentiles tread under foot the holy city Jerusalem for the first 42 months of Daniel's 70th " week ", this would make no sense. Since Christ does not return until the end of the 70th "week", how or why would the Gentiles lose control over the city Jerusalem?  Furthermore, it makes perfect sense that the Gentiles "tread under foot" the "holy city" AFTER the ascendence of the antichrist in the "midst of the week."  This would coincide with the temple sacrifice ceasing in the middle of the week and the covenant being violated and the persecution of the Jews commencing for the last 42 months of Daniel's 70th "week."

The LAST HALF of Daniel's 70th " week " has the "woman" [Israel] fleeing from the antichrist for the 1260 days.
"And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days. Rev 12:6

The "woman" [Israel] escapes [apparently via an air-lift] the persecution of the antichrist for the LAST HALF of Daniel's 70th week
 3 and ONE-HALF YEARS .
"And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time , from the face of the serpent." Rev.12:14

While the antichrist is persecuting the Jews during the last half of Daniel's 70th week he is also speaking blasphemously for
42 MONTHS.
"And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months." Rev 13:5

It is, therefore, absolutely clear that the Book of Revelation EXACTLY matches Daniel's 70th week of Daniel 9:27.

<------------------------------------------------- Daniel's 70th Week ----------------------------------------------------->
1260 days - Rev 11:3-12 Two witnesses
Rev11:7 1260 days - Rev 12:6 Israel escapes

beast
42 Months - Rev 11:2 Gentiles tread Jerusalem

ascends
3.5 years  - Rev 12:14 Israel escapes

42 Months - Rev 13:5 antichrist power

02-27-2010

Reader Asserts the Following:
[I repeat the relevant verses here:]

Reader Assertions
1)  the "he" of Daniel 9:27 is Messiah the Prince
2)  the one week of Daniel 9:27 is not the 70th week of Daniel but 7 literal days
3)  the 70th week of Daniel is not mentioned in the book of Daniel because the prophecy is sealed
4)  the he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease is resultant from Jesus' crucifixion and the same he IS Jesus.

Answer
First of all, after the introductory verse of Daniel 9:24, the prophecy is told in chronological order.  Please note that this would require that the prince that shall come (of Daniel 9:26) will do so AFTER Messiah is cut off.   This precludes the prince that shall come from being the Messiah.  Furthermore, in Daniel 9:26, the people ... shall destroy the city and the sanctuary will do so BEFORE the prince-that-shall-come actually comes.  As we know, the city and the santuary were destroyed in 70AD.   Ergo, the prince-that-shall-come must necessarily do so AFTER 70 AD.  This also precludes the prince that shall come from being the Messiah.  The people that destroy the city and the sanctuary are Gentiles.  Since Jesus is a Jew this precludes the Messiah Jesus from being the prince that shall come.  See this for a discussion of the genealogy of the Roman soldiers.

Necessarily, these events must occur in the order described:
Messiah the Prince is cutoff (crucified),
the people (the Roman soldiers and conscripts) of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city Jerusalem (70 AD),
the prince that shall come actually comes.

Please note that the entire verse of Daniel 9:26 describes events that occur after the 62 weeks (which is after the 7 weeks).  In other words, verse 26 describes events that are AFTER the 69 weeks and BEFORE the 70th week.  The events of Daniel 9:26 cover a perod from the crucifixion until at least 70AD.

Now, it is time to give the details of the prince that shall come.  It is true that Daniel's 70th week is mentioned in NO other verse in the entire Bible other than Daniel 9:27.  Furthermore, the midst of the week is mentioned in NO other verse in the Bible.  If Daniel 9:27 does not refer to the 70th week of Daniel, then, there is NO way to analyze and chronologically breakdown the book of Revelation (done on this page) so that one can find an event for the midst of the week because there would be NO midst of the week.   The MIDST OF THE WEEK in Daniel 9:27 is absolutely essential in matching this time with the words of Jesus Christ in Mathew 24:15.   If Daniel 9:27 is a period of seven days from Palm Sunday to the resurrection, then, there is NO way to properly construct a Revelation chronology.

Regarding:
4)  the he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease is resultant from Jesus' crucifixion and the same he IS Jesus.

We covered this topic already on this page and in the following discussion.
In short, we already know that he is the prince that chall come and he can not be Jesus, and that the event that causes the sacrifice and the oblation to cease IS an abomination.  Unless we want to to refer to the crucifixion as overspreading abominations that result in desolation, we are forced to conclude that this is NOT the crucifixion.

If we accept the reader's assertions we are forced to say that Robert Anderson's 1894 classic book, The Coming Prince, was written about the wrong person.   http://endtimepilgrim.org/70wks2.htm

One is forced to conclude that Daniel 9:27 is the 70th week of Daniel or there is NO 70th week of Daniel described in the Bible. Note: There is no 70th week in the book of Revelation.  If there is NO 70th week of Daniel in the book of Daniel, then, Gabriel did not answer Daniel's prayer.  Do you believe that?   I do not.  The fact that the book is sealed (not the 70 weeks prophecy) in Daniel chapter 12 refers to the fact that when Jesus Christ OPENS the SEALS in the 5th chapter of the Book of Revelation, the rest of the story is supplied.  The details are described on this page and show how Daniels prophecy, Jesus' words in Mathew 24, and the Book of Revelation fit together perfectly.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life" - Jesus Christ

John 14:6
